--------------------------------------------------- Product Name: Ichthyon Experimental Steamboat Copyright 2019 Michael Crisafulli Contact Michael_C via Renderosity Site Mail -------------------------------------- Product Description Captain George Beadon wasn't shy about promoting his innovative ideas including ship propulsion and control, lifeboats, and canal boats, often applying for and sometimes getting patents. In 1858 he built the Ichthyon, an experimental steamboat that used concepts from at least one of his patents. This small boat, sized to navigate narrow English canals, had an interesting hull with conical helix propellers first described in his 1852 British patent. The Ichthyon went beyond the patent, using a double-pontoon hull with two propellers that were also used to steer the boat, which had no rudder. Steering was accomplished by running the propellers at different speeds, even reversing one, so that the boat could turn in its own length. Perhaps exaggerating, Beadon claimed the Ichthyon, not towing, could achieve 32 mph and run over shoals and through mud. An 1860 news article reported that it "towed two barges from Bristol, laden with 90 tons of stone … at the rate of three miles an hour". The Ichthyon Experimental Steamboat 3D model is a fully-rigged Poser figure, sized for Poser people. The figure is based on a photograph of the Ichthyon on a trailer and minimal descriptions published in several 19th century newspaper articles. An imagined steampunk gunboat version is included as a bonus. The details of the cockpit are not visible in the photo so are completely speculative in the model. There are two boilers in the stern, consistent with the two narrow stacks in the photo. I placed two vertical steam engines in the bow, one for each of the boilers, leaving room amidships for a small boat crew. I thought the simplest way to accomplish steering with relative propeller speed was separate locomotive-like controls for each engine. The control levers are configured so that they are adjusted intuitively in the direction of the turn to steer the boat. To maximize crew space I ran the steam piping within the pontoons and added coal bunkers in spaces that were inconvenient for standing or sitting. The Gunboat is completely imaginary, using separate parented Nordenfelt Gun figure mounted on the foredeck and plate shield pre-loaded props to protect the cockpit and gun crew. (The sine functions used to coordinate engine movement use information from VK's 2006 tutorial "How to write ARC code".) -------------------------------------- Installation Instructions: Unzip files to your main Poser directory, being sure to check "Use Folder Names" and the files will unpack to their proper location. Refer to the file list below for file locations. In general, Ichthyon Poser files will be found in the "Michael_C/Beadon" folder within each of the Poser sub-libraries (Figure, Pose, etc.) Note that although most of the Poser files may be moved to other locations, the geometries and textures MUST be left in the listed locations. -------------------------------------- Usage Tips: The Ichthyon (and Gunboat) figure uses ERC controls at the Body level. To access the controls the figure Body is selected by default. PARAMETER DIALS - The parameter dial groups load collapsed for convenience. Open a group or subgroup to use it. Steamboat & Gunboat ------------------- Transform These standard dials control the overall orientation and position of the figures. Set X (Sway), Y (Heave), Z (Surge) position and yaw, pitch and roll rotation with these controls. The Resize scale control is provided for resizing the figure in scenes where matching standard Poser figure size is unnecessary. The Adjust Draft control has the same effect as Heave. Control There are separate controls for each engine: - Throttle – Changes the Throttle lever position from full open to closed - Release CTL Lever – Moves the latch on the Forward-Reverse Control lever - FWD-REV - Moves the control lever between Full Forward and Full Reverse. This motion is coordinated with the (otherwise static) Stephenson mechanism on the engine. The Turn Props control turns the propellers coordinated with the Throttle and FWD-REV controls and the Boiler Steam Valve positions. For the first 360 degrees of movement, the engine piston and crank operate realistically (this operation is limited by the sine calculation). Note that if the Throttle or Steam Valves are closed the corresponding prop will not turn. Boilers There are separate controls for each boiler. - Open the Left and Right boiler door - Close the Steam Valve that supplies the engine. (The position of this valve affects propeller speed.) - Close the Steam Return valve. Extras - Adjust the position of the driver's bench. - Flag - The Wave control rotates the flag on the flagpole – The flag has a gravity and three Wind morphs. Adjust these for different flag appearance. Nordenfelt Gun -------------- The standard Transform group is not needed for the parented Organ Gun. Controls - Rotate Gun – Operates the coordinated gun revolution mechanism and turns the gun around its vertical axis. - Elevate Gun - Operates the coordinated gun elevation mechanism and turns the gun on its lateral axis. - Fire Gun - Operates the coordinated gun firing mechanism including the fire lever. POSES - Crew Poses for M4 and V4 in the Ichthyon cockpit. Additional poses are provided for the Gunboat. Note that these poses may require adjustment for clothing. - Hide-Show Hide/show the Canvas canopy and frame, the boxes and covers on the deck, and the coal crib and hot coals preloaded props. - MATs and MORs MAT poses are included to restore the Ichthyon and Gunboat to their default materials. MOR files are supplied to restore the default setup of the Gunboat and Nordenfelt Gun. The Gun setup is consistent with the gunner poses. CAMERAS A set of standard cameras is included to provide full views of the Ichthyon; the default Poser cameras do not show the entire figure. ------------------------------ -- DAZ Studio Compatibility - ------------------------------ The Ichthyon and Gunboat figures load, operate, and render in DAZ Studio (bump maps do not render). DAZ Studio uses different camera designations from Poser so the included camera presets don't all work. Those that work may require some adjustment. The Ichthyon and Gunboat figures includes some pre-loaded smart props. Unlike in Poser, the MAT, MOR and Hide-Show poses don’t automatically apply to these parented props. The props need to be selected one by one and the pose applied individually. For example the Coal Cribs remains visible after applying the Hide pose.
