--------------------------------------------------- Product Name: XF5U Experimental Fighter Copyright 2025 Michael Crisafulli Contact Michael_C via Renderosity Site Mail -------------------------------------- Product Description In 1940 Charles Zimmerman filed Patent 2,431,293, describing a low aspect ratio, disc-shaped lifting body aircraft. After wind tunnel testing of a scale model, the manufacturer, Vought, built a prototype designated V-173, but because of its shape, was nick-named "Zimmer Skimmer", "Flying Pancake" and "Flying Flapjack". Many test flights proved the aircraft was quite maneuverable with a very short takeoff distance. With a brisk headwind it could actually achieve vertical takeoff. Charles Lindbergh made at least one flight in the prototype. After the success of the V-173 the Navy had two full-sized prototype fighter aircraft built. One of these underwent ground test runs but by this time jet fighters were beginning development and the project was cancelled. The XF5U never flew. Wildcat Head Vectors by Vecteezy (https://www.vecteezy.com/free-vector/wildcat-head) -------------------------------------- Notes on the Model The model is based on historical photos of actual XF5U aircraft, a 1946 pilot's handbook, several modern sets of plan drawings, and photos of scale models. -------------------------------------- Installation Instructions: Unzip files to your main Poser directory, being sure to check "Use Folder Names" and the files will unpack to their proper location. Refer to the file list below for file locations. Components are found in the "Michael_C/XF5U" folder within each of the Poser sub-libraries (Figure, Pose, etc.). Note that although most of the Poser files may be moved to other locations, the geometries and textures MUST be in the listed locations. -------------------------------------- Usage Tips: The XF5U figure uses ERC controls at the Body level. For easy access to the controls the figure's Body loads selected by default. PARAMETER DIALS - The parameter dial groups load collapsed for convenience. Open a group or subgroup to use its dials. Transform Resize - This dial changes the size of the entire figure. Other standard transform dials control rotation and position of the figure within the scene. Control (The lifting body XF5U did not have separate aileron and elevator surfaces. Instead there was a combined surface called an ailavator on each stub wing.) Pitch CTL – The ailavators operate together in concert with the pilot's control stick. Bank CTL – The ailavators operate in opposite directions in concert with the control stick. Rudder CTL – The rudders operate in concert with the rudder pedals. Trim Controls Similarly to the Pitch and Bank CTLs, the two trim surfaces operate in concert with pilot trim controls. Stability Flaps – These XF5U surfaces operated mostly automatically as a function of aerodynamic conditions and tail wheel position. The Poser Figure simulates this operation, and allows limited manual operation. Other Controls (Except for Propeller Pitch these parameters affect only the pilot control levers.) Throttle Propeller Pitch – Individual propeller pitch is also changed. Supercharger Mixture 1 and 2 Landing Gear Raise LG – The main and tail landing gear are retracted coordinated with the pilot control lever. Extend Main LG – The strut is extended some. Extend Tail LG – Similarly. Spin Wheels – All the LG wheels spin together. Miscel Deploy Arrestor – The arresting gear is extended (default naval configuration). Landed Position – Rotate the aircraft from flying to on ground position. Open Canopy Spin Engine Fans – The inlet fans on the engine intakes spin (not particularly visibly). Open Engine Vents – The four engine vent doors open. Spin Props – The propellers trun in opposite direction, like the actual aircraft. Adjust Arm Rest – Raise the small arm rest near the throttle controls. Depress Steps – The XF5U had a set of steps to the cockpit that depressed as the pilot stepped on them. These controls depress the steps individually. POSES (These poses also affect Propeller Blur, if loaded) Navy Configuration (default) – Colors matching historic photos. Marines Configuration – Alternate speculative Marines Paint scheme with arresting gear hidden. (See DAZ Studio compatibility.) Crew M4 & V4 Pilot poses (as loaded aircraft position) On Steps (The aircraft must be in Landed Position.) Poses for M4 & V4 on the first step and on Steps 6 & 7 or 4 & 5. (Depress associated steps – Step, Step 6, etc. – using Depress parameter.) HIDE-SHOW Fans – Not particularly visible, hiding the fans simulates fan blur. Propellers – Hide these to use Propeller Blur props Pylons – These load hidden. Show them to use Drop Tanks or Bomb Load props. MATs Default (as loaded) material set. Turn navigation, formation and gun camera light glow on and off. (See DAZ Studio compatibility.) PROPS Smart props Bomb Load positioned on pylons. Alternate Drop Tanks positioned on pylons. Gun Bursts for nose-mounted machine guns. Propeller Blur (two versions: Navy, Marines) LIGHTS Simple Day and night sets CAMERAS Full Set - All the standard cameras are positioned to show the complete figure in its default loaded position. Note that adjustments may be necessary depending on your document window setup. Dolly CAMs Various cockpit view Dolly cameras. ------------------------------ -- DAZ Studio Compatibility -- Tested in DAZ Studio 4.21 to the extent that parameter controls and various figure poses work as intended. I've made no attempt to convert or optimize materials. The XF5U figure loads, operates and renders in DAZ Studio. DAZ Studio uses different camera designations from Poser so the included camera presets don't all work. Those that work may require adjustment. the Navy and Marine Configuration poses apply correctly to the figure. In Poser these poses also affect Propeller Blur, if loaded. In Studio the Blur props must be individually selected and the pose applied. The Gun Burst and Nav Light glow (ambient) material channel is incompatible with Studio. The diffuse color channel works. ------------------------------ List of files contained within this product's zip files. :Documentation:Michael_C Marketplace_Standard_License.txt XF5U_Experimental_Fighter_ReadMe.txt XF5U Promo.pdf :Runtime:Geometries:MCC:XF5U 1000lbBombUV-P.obj DropTank1UV-P.obj PropBlurUV-P.obj XF5Uuv-P.obj XXGunBurst.obj :Runtime:libraries:Camera:Michael_C:XF5U XF5U Set.cm2 XF5U Set.png :Runtime:libraries:Camera:Michael_C:XF5U:Dolly CAMs Cockpit 1.cm2 Cockpit 1.png Cockpit 2.cm2 Cockpit 2.png Cockpit 3.cm2 Cockpit 3.png Cockpit 4.cm2 Cockpit 4.png Cockpit 5.cm2 Cockpit 5.png Cockpit 6.cm2 Cockpit 6.png :Runtime:libraries:Character:Michael_C:XF5U XF5U.cr2 XF5U.png :Runtime:libraries:Light:Michael_C:XF5U Daylight.lt2 Daylight.png Moonlight.lt2 Moonlight.png :Runtime:libraries:Pose:Michael_C:XF5U Marines Configuration.png Marines Configuration.pz2 Navy Configuration.png Navy Configuration.pz2 :Runtime:libraries:Pose:Michael_C:XF5U:Crew M4 Pilot.png M4 Pilot.pz2 V4 Pilot.png V4 Pilot.pz2 :Runtime:libraries:Pose:Michael_C:XF5U:Crew:On Steps !Aircraft in Landed Position.png !Aircraft in Landed Position.pz2 M4 Step.png M4 Step.pz2 M4 Steps 6-7.png M4 Steps 6-7.pz2 V4 Step.png V4 Step.pz2 V4 Steps 4-5.png V4 Steps 4-5.pz2 :Runtime:libraries:Pose:Michael_C:XF5U:HIDE-SHOW Fans HIDE.png Fans HIDE.pz2 Fans SHOW.png Fans SHOW.pz2 Propellers HIDE.png Propellers HIDE.pz2 Propellers SHOW.png Propellers SHOW.pz2 Pylons HIDE.png Pylons HIDE.pz2 Pylons SHOW.png Pylons SHOW.pz2 :Runtime:libraries:Pose:Michael_C:XF5U:MATs Default MAT.png Default MAT.pz2 Light Glow OFF.png Light Glow OFF.pz2 Light Glow ON.png Light Glow ON.pz2 :Runtime:libraries:Props:Michael_C:XF5U !Show Pylons.png !Show Pylons.pp2 Bomb Load.png Bomb Load.pp2 Drop Tanks.png Drop Tanks.pp2 Gun Bursts.png Gun Bursts.pp2 Propeller Blur Marines.png Propeller Blur Marines.pp2 Propeller Blur.png Propeller Blur.pp2 :Runtime:textures:MCC:IBL cloudscape-day.jpg pero-kalimero-made-night.jpg :Runtime:textures:MCC:XF5U MC-XF-Bomb.jpg MC-XF-BombBump.jpg MC-XF-CockpitInterior.jpg MC-XF-Controls.jpg MC-XF-DropTank.jpg MC-XF-DropTankBump.jpg MC-XF-Flame.jpg MC-XF-FlameTr.jpg MC-XF-InstFaces.jpg MC-XF-Interior.jpg MC-XF-InteriorBump.jpg MC-XF-LG-Arrestor.jpg MC-XF-Misc.jpg MC-XF-MiscBump.jpg MC-XF-Panels.jpg MC-XF-PanelsBump.jpg MC-XF-PanelsNM.jpg MC-XF-PropBlur.jpg MC-XF-PropBlurMarine.jpg MC-XF-PropBlurTrans.jpg MC-XF-Propeller.jpg MC-XF-Seat.jpg MC-XF-Skin.jpg MC-XF-SkinMarines.jpg Templates\Michael_C\XF5U Blur.bmp Bomb.bmp CockpitInterior.bmp Controls.bmp DropTank.bmp Flame.bmp Glasses.bmp InstFaces.bmp Interior.bmp LG-Arrestor.bmp Misc.bmp MiscLights+.bmp Panels.bmp Propeller.bmp seat.bmp Skin.bmp
