If you want to know whenever I upload a new freebie to ShareCG sign up to the site (it's free and they don't burden you with spam) and then you have the option to become a follower of mine on the site; their system can then email you whenever I release something new there. -------------- Needed Files List and System Required: Poser 6 or later, DAZ Studio 2.3 or later; in DAZ Studio you will have to adjust materials manually to get the best appearance. Note that I cannot yet make custom Studio options as the program will not run on my computer at all. This product was created on a Mac and should work on both Mac and PC. A minimum of 512Mb of RAM with Poser (Mac and PC). 2Gb of RAM is recommended for use on Poser with any meaningfully detailed set loaded. -------------- Ownership statement: All of this product's content was created by The Fire Angel. Blender was used for all modelling. Poser 6 plus the BB-Edit Lite text editor were used to create the Poser format files. PhotoShop Elements was used for the texturing. All source files have been kept in case proof of copyright is needed. -------------- Detailed Installation Instructions Extract the zip-archive with your zip program: - Open WinZip and press the button "Extract" In the window "Folders/drives", select the folder that contain your Poser program. (for example c:\program files\Poser4\). - The check box "Use Folder names" must be marked. That way, all files will placed in the correct path. -------------- Conversion and/or application instructions Mac users will need to install using a manual method (or an Applescript known as "Merge Folders"; Google or another search engine will help you find it). -------------- Materials: If you want to texture this vehicle yourself there is a guide to doing so in the ReadMe folder, called FireStarTextureGuide.txt. The car uses tiling textures on many material zones to allow very high detail levels without large (and therefore memory-eating) textures; a 1024x1024 pixel map can be used but it will give as much detail as a conventional texure more than 6,000 pixels across. The quality of results is of course still dependent upon the quality of the textures and whether they tile properly, but this method works very well when the textures are good. -------------- Usage Tips/Limitations Generally this model won't render well alone; it has reflective nodes in the shaders for many material zones and so it needs objects around the car to provide something to reflect. Put the car in a sci-fi set and it will look superb, but even just adding a textured ground plane is a help. There are a lot of files and plenty of options; I'll run through them and where you will find them one area at a time. Note that I don't always describe things in the order in which they appear in the Poser menu. 1. Figures menu: Fire Angel Cars: There are three models, the Police car, with two light-bars, the Sedan, and the Taxi. The Taxi and the Police car have an internal screen that separates the rear compartment from the front, something that many real vehicles of this type have. MAT Poses for the Police car need to be made just for the Police car if you want to set the light-bar up properly, otherwise it will take Poses for the other versions, so if you want a black or pink Police car go ahead... MAT Poses for the Taxi set the signs on the roof, but you can use MAT Poses for the plain Sedan; if you want to set the sign on the roof as well, just use one of the taxi MATs first, then the colour option you want. This means you can have a bright red or flower-power pink taxi if you wish, using the MATs provided. Each wheel has it's own suspension dial, so you can operate the suspension to pose the vehicle realistically on slightly uneven ground. In addition, you will find a dial for each tyre, so you can set the tyre to run flat. If you do this, it will deform realistically as the wheel goes round. The tyre deformation in this product makes it, as far as I know, the third Poser wheeled vehicle to have deforming tyres; my FA-MUV was certainly the first. The steering is controlled by a single dial which poses the front wheels and the steering wheel. There is a dial to rotate all the wheels together for animators, and you can also select each wheel-hub and rotate it individually. This allows you to set wheels to different angles if there is more than one FireStar in your scene; after all, it would be poor realism if all the cars in your picture or animation happened to have their tyres at the same angle... NOTE: AllWheelsRoll is the dial that rotates all of the wheels, this helps if you're an animator. For each unit on the dial the wheels will rotate the correct amount to roll the car the same number of Poser native units. So check that you're using Poser in the native units display mode, not in feet and inches or metric units. To be cl;ear, once you do this as the car moves one Poser unit, the dial should advance one unit too, then the wheels will rotate the correct amount to roll that distance. The seats will each seat a normal sized Poser person or the Freak 4 in reasonable comfort. If seating normal sized Poser people you can often squeeze three in the back, but if using Freak 4 characters two will be the limit for obvious reasons. You'll have to turn FreakScale off to fit them in, this isn't noticeable in most scenes. There is a fridge fitted between the front seats, opened by a dial in the CarBody part. Smart-props can fill it with canned soft drinks, or you could decide to use it as a strong-box. The Glove compartment also opens in a similar fashion. Doors NOTE: To open doors you don't select the doors but use the dials in the body; this applies to all doors. Speedometer NOTE: Posing the speedometer is usually only worthwhile in close-ups; you can pose it in miles per hour using the "Speedomtr MPH" dial or in kilometres per hour using the "Speedomtr km/hr" dial. IF YOU USE THE KILOMETERS PER HOUR DIAL THE MILES PER HOUR DIAL CEASES TO WORK. So ensure the kilometres per hour dial is left at zero or reset to zero if you wish to use the miles per hour one. 2. Poses menu: FireStar Sedan: Reset FireStar: This resets the car itself to the initial loaded position; there are three versions of the vehicle and it works on all of them. It is useful if you have moved the vehicle but later want to use the supplied poses to put a driver inside. The car has many adjustable parts, like the front seats which move backwards and forwards, the steering wheel mount which can be moved back from the default position, and the pedals which are mounted on a movable platform. This was done to allow the car to be driven by very tall and very short Poser people. Because of the adjustable parts of the car the poses in this folder consist of a similar pair for each supported figure; Freak 4, G2 Males, G2 Females, Michael 4 and Victoria 4. You need to apply one pose to the car and one to the driver, I tried to make it clear which is which by adding labels to the icons as well as by selecting the names carefully. Once a figure is positioned you can make the FireStar the parent of the figure and then move the vehicle to wherever you need it to be. If IK chains are on in the driver figure you may need to switch them off in some circumstances before moving the car. Once the figure has had the pose applied you can keep IK chains on if you do the following; select each hand in turn and make the steering wheel the parent of that hand (you can't do that if IK chains for that arm aren't on). After this the hands will stay on the wheel (and move with it as it turns) if you use the steering dials; this is handy for anyone but expecially so for animators. Similarly you can turn on IK chains in the legs, then make the pedals the parents of the feet. The feet will then stay on the pedals as they move. This will rarely be visble but if you're an animator or a fussy illustrator you may choose to enable it "just in case". You must use the supplied poses with the car in Left-Hand-Drive mode; to put the driver in the driving seat in Right-Hand-Drive mode, start with the driver in place and the car in Right-Hand-Drive, then select the driver, go to the Figure menu and choose "Select Figure Parent"; make the driver's seat the parent of your figure, and if you have IK chains on ensure that the appropriate body parts are parented as described above. Once that is done you can switch the car to Right-Hand-Drive and the driver will move with the seat. 3. Poses Menu: FireStar Sedan MAT: Wheel Hide/Show poses: These can make the front wheels invisible one at a time so you can use some of the props provided to show the vehicle having a wheel (or both front wheels) changed. This car, like the Citroen DS and some Cord models, has partially concealed rear wheels, so if it were real you would have to remove at least one body panel to change a rear wheel. I was going to allow this but the polygon count got silly, so I left it out and I have only provided options to hide the front wheels. Bodywork MATs: These MAT poses give you plenty of options. There are two kinds, the shader-only ones which will use less of your computer's memory, and those that have a texture map at 4000x4000 pixels for the body. The icons are clearly labelled so you can see which is which. If memory is short when assembling a scene try to avoid using the Map based materials and it will save a fair amount of RAM. Each bodywork MAT also sets a suitable interior colour scheme, but if you wish you can then use one of the "interior only" MAT poses to change the interior colours. User MATs: There are three MAT poses designed to allow you to apply your own textures to the car bodywork. These just load versions of the template, but you can replace those files with your own, using the same filenames, and the MATs will then apply your textures. You would also be advised in such a case to replace the icons with your own 91x91 pixel .png files. Interior Only MATs: These change the interior colours of the car and should be applied after a bodywork MAT if you want a different colour scheme to the one applied by the first MAT. High-Res Underside MAT: This will very rarely be needed, and will very rarely show a visible result. It is present because it does help in certain situations, so here's the information you need to select when to use it: The underside of the car (which includes the wheel wells) uses a 2048x2048 texture and the suspension uses another one the same size. In most images this is fine and you won't notice any texture blur. If you show the car on one side with the camera fairly close, or show in close-up someone changing one of the wheels, then the High-Res Underside switches to 4000x4000 textures for both of these texture maps. This prevents texture blur in such close-ups. Hub Cap Prop MATs: These are not for the car, but for the hub-cap prop provided; they set the ring colour to match bodywork colours that you may have selected. In Poser these will only work if at least one figure is loaded into the scene. These MATs are provided to make it easy to show a wheel change in progress with the hub cap the right colour. The Three User MATs allow you to customise the wheels using the supplied textures, which are copies of the template for the wheels. License Plates MATs: The supplied MAT poses to change the license plates allow you to choose from a wide variety of designs, so you can have more than one car in your scene and not have them all with identical license plates. There are three user plate MATs which work the same way as those for the bodywork; replace the existing .png icons and the .jpg files with your own files (with the same filenames) and the MATs will then apply your license plate designs. NOTE: The license plate designs provided may not include your state or country; I can't do them all! Use the User MATs and PhotoShop (or Paint Shop Pro or whatever you use instead) to make your own textures for the plates. There's no particular significance to the list of states I chose, they were just the ones I made before I ran out of willingness to make more. I have not followed existing designs in all cases, this is a futuristic car so things don't have to be done exactly the way they are done in the present day. Taxi Sign MATs: These are MAT poses to change just the Taxi sign on the roof. I have provided a few options I thought most useful plus three "User" poses. These can be made to apply your own textures to the sign by replacing the three "User" files in the textures folder. Remember to replace the .png files as well to change the icons if you do customise these texture maps. This allows you to put "Delivery" or "Safety Car" on the sign or whatever else you find useful. Light MATs: These do make a difference, but it is visible only if your scene is dark. The difference is only to the apparent "glow' of the lights within their casings; they don't cast light into the scene. If you want that, use post-work or add spot-lights to the scene and parent them to the car. 4. Props Menu: FireStar Sedan Props: There are a number of props provided to help scene building with the car, and many are suitable for use in scenes where the car isn't present at all. Some are provided in multiple versions with different textures, using English or alien text. In each of the alien versions the icon has a sample of the text in it, so that you can match them to the license plate text used. The soft drinks and/or coffee cups can be loaded into the car by using the smart-prop versions. Since this is a luxury car there's a fridge between the front seats so there is a set of soft drink cans you can load in there. The jack is capable of extending to a much greater height than is needed to jack up the FireStar, so you can use it with some other vehicles. The smart-prop versions load already adjusted to the correct height. Note that the hub-cap prop loads with the colour matched to the default sedan bodywork colour; use the MAT poses to match it to the other car colours, as described above. The head-up-display is rather large and needs a texture map, a transparency map and ambient alpha map to work properly, so if preparing your own texures for it examine carefully the maps provided. Normally it would only be visible from behind, so in renders of the car where the viewpoint is ahead of the head-up-display I recommend that it is left out or deleted if it's already been loaded. It only looks any good when the camera is behind it and inside the car, where you get to see it reasonably close up. 5. DAZ Studio: DAZ Studio won't run on my machine at all, so I can't test or prepare special options for Studio. Once I get a more up-to-date computer, rest assured I will support Studio properly. While I can't suport use in DAZ Studio the product works, with the following limitations: Materials load without the proper reflective properlties. Set the specular options and reduce the shine, then add some ray-traced reflections to some surfaces (up to about 20%) and the car looks fine. The lights have a bump map for the glass which at the time of writing Studio doesn't load automatically, it's in the folder: :Runtime:textures:FireAngel:Ground_Vehicles:FireStar_Sedan: The file name is: FA_Car01LightsGlassB.jpg Apply it manually and the glass on the lights will look a lot better. The one for the light-bars is in the same folder, and is called: FA_Car01LightBarsB.jpg If your model loads with parts detached in an "exploded" version then you need to update DAZ Studio. DAZ have fixed the bug that caused this problem in one version of Studio. 6.
