Author: The Fire Angel Author E-mail: Available after purchase. -------------- Free Extras: There will be add-ons appearing for this product in my ShareCG portfolio of free downloads. Find them on: http://www.sharecg.com/pf/full_uploads.php?pf_user_name=fire_angel If there is nothing there for the Stormbringer when you visit try again two or three weeks later. There will eventually be at least two add-on texture packages, probably three or more. There may be some add-on props as well. If you want to know whenever I upload a new freebie to ShareCG sign up to the site (it's free and they don't burden you with spam) and then you have the option to become a follower of mine on the site; their system can then email you whenever I release something new there. -------------- Needed Files List and System Required: Poser 6 or later, DAZ Studio 3.1.2.32 or later This product was created on a Mac and should work on both Mac and PC. A minimum of 768Mb of RAM with Poser (Mac and PC). 2Gb of RAM is recommended for use with any meaningfully detailed set loaded. -------------- Ownership statement: All of this product's content was created by The Fire Angel. Blender was used for all modelling. Poser 6 plus the BB-Edit Lite text editor were used to create the Poser format files. PhotoShop Elements was used for the texturing. DAZ Studio 3.1.2.32 and the BB-Edit Lite text editor were used to create the DAZ Studio MAT files. All source files have been kept in case proof of copyright is needed. -------------- Detailed Installation Instructions Extract the zip-archive with your zip program: - Open WinZip and press the button "Extract" In the window "Folders/drives", select the folder that contains your Poser program. (for example c:\program files\Poser4\). - The check box "Use Folder names" must be marked. That way, all files will placed in the correct path. DAZ Studio Install: Don't install this product in the DAZ Studio Content directory; install it in the Runtime directory for Poser if you have Poser, and then set DAZ Studio to import it as Poser content from there (in Studio's preferences). If you don't have Poser install it in a Runtime folder alongside "Content" and then set DAZ Studio to treat this folder as a Poser Runtime folder to import from (In preferences, just as if you had Poser as well as Studio). This kind of unified DAZ Studio/Poser Runtime installation is a lot easier to produce and to debug than separate Poser and Studio versions, and I'm new to DAZ Studio so that's the best way for me to deliver a decent product for both sets of users. -------------- Conversion and/or application instructions Mac users will need to install using a manual method (or an Applescript known as "Merge Folders"; Google or another search engine will help you find it; make sure you get version 1.1 or later). -------------- Materials: If you want to texture this vehicle yourself there is a guide to doing so in the documentation folder, called FA-StormbringerTextureGuide.txt. The Stormbringer uses tiling textures on many material zones to allow very high detail levels without large (and therefore memory-eating) textures; a 1024x1024 pixel map can be used but it will give as much detail as a conventional texure more than 8,000 pixels across. The quality of results is of course still dependent upon the quality of the textures and whether they tile properly, but this method works very well when the textures are good. -------------- Usage Tips/Limitations Generally this model renders best when you put it inside a set or use IBL (Image Based Lighting) for the sky. This provides something for the reflective cockpit canopy to reflect, making it look much more realistic. There are a lot of files and plenty of options; I'll run through them and where you will find them one area at a time. Note that I don't always describe things in the order in which they appear in the Poser or DAZ Studio menu. If you are making an exterior render, with no doors open onto the rear cabin so that it can't be seen, load the cargo version. The cargo version of the Stormbringer and Stormrider use significantly less memory than the versions with seating and other items inside the cabin. Extra tip: If you want to show the 60mm Rocket Pod props empty, just set the "Ripple Launch Rockets" dial to a high value, 20 to 40 or perhaps more, and the rockets will be so far away that they won't show in your render. -------------- 1. Figures menu: FA-Stormbringer: Stormbringer Assault, Stormbringer Cargo, Stormbringer CSAR, Stormbringer Shuttle. These are the fully armed military versions of the Stormbringer. They are identical on the outside, only the rear cabin varies, plus some of the functional ERC dials. The Cargo version has an empty cargo bay for the rear cabin, and so has no seat-rotation dials. The Shuttle also has no seat rotation dials and seats 14 people in the rear cabin. The Assault version has twelve seats, in most military organisations that is a full-sized infantry squad. The seats can swivel to face the rear for atmospheric entry and approach to a landing, and can face forwards for lift-off and climb to orbit. For loading and unloading they should rotate to face sideways again. CSAR stands for Combat Search And Rescue; it has a full ambulance interior and loads with several smart-props already attached. This is the kind of craft that might be sent to look for a fighter pilot shot down over enemy territory, usually with a fighter escort. Dials: Click on the main body of the ship (the body part is called "DropShip") to find the control dials. The dial names are mostly self-explanatory, they open the doors, lower the leanding gear etc. The engine pods can rotate for short or vertical take-offs and landings and for orbital braking they can face forwards. -------------- 2. Figures menu: FA-Stormrider: Stormrider Ambulance, Stormrider Cargo, Stormrider Shuttle. The Stormrider is the unarmed version of the Stormbringer, used for ambulance work and civilian shuttle work. It has a sensor turret which would have a number of sensors on to allow brown-out landings to be safely conducted (a brown-out landing is one where a lot of dust is kicked up by the craft, as when helicopters land in a desert; Stormbringer would be prone to this effect and it would be worse than most helicopters). The sensors could also be used for mapping and information gathering. -------------- 3. Figures menu: Other figures: Casualty Trolley: This can be raised or lowered and the castors rotated for steering. Click on the main part of the figure to see dials to raise and lower the trolley and rotate all of the castors together. The figure version is provided as it is more adaptable than the smart-prop versions, and is useful in scenes that don't even contain the Stormbringer or Stormrider spacecraft. Weapons Pods: These are conforming figures with smart-props already loaded. The weapons inside are smart-props rather than built in so that you can delete them and add your own if you wish. Load either of the Weapons Pods figures and then conform it to the Stormbringer DropShip. In DAZ Studio it will conform automatically to whichever Stormbringer is selected at load time, so if you have more than one in your scene make sure you select the right one first. A dial to open the doors for weapons firing is found by clicking on the main body of the pods figures. If you click on any of the four 60mm Rocket Pod props you will see a dial to launch all of the rockets in a sequence, called "Ripple Launch Rockets". This dial does not work correctly in some versions of DAZ Studio due to a bug in the software; however it can still be used in still images if you set the value of the dial high enough. -------------- 4. Tips and special features for animators: For those animators who want to set up keyframe animation of the wheels by hand, the diameter of the nosewheels is 0.178 Poser units, while the mainwheels are 0.223 Poser units. This information will allow you to calculate how far to rotate them as the ship moves forwards. There are two dials in the body of the Stormbringer and Stormrider to make animating the ship taxiing much easier. One is called "Roll Forward" and it will move the model forwards while rotating all of the wheels the correct amount for the distance rolled. I am told some animators prefer to keep the main model static and translate the scenery instead (why?); for those there is the "All Wheels Roll" dial. "All Wheels Roll" will rotate the wheels the correct amount to roll the ship forwards one unit for each unit of one on the dial, so to move forward one Poser unit, set or leave the dial at 0, then keyframe it, set the dial to one, move the ship forward one Poser unit and keyframe it. 5. Poses menu: FA-Stormbringer MAT: For most users, these need no explanation; select the Stormbringer or Stormrider and double click on the icon. The code will apply the new texture set and appropriate material settings to the ship. Proper DAZ Studio versions will be used by Studio automatically if both are installed; if you only use Poser you don't need the DAZ Studio files in the separate .ZIP. If you only use DAZ Studio, you can delete the ".pz2" versions, but only those that have a matching ".dsa" file. If you're one of the many who use both Poser and DAZ Studio then of course leave both sets of files in place. -------------- 6. Props Menu: FA-Stormbringer: I deliberately designed some of the props to be useful as scene fillers in many scenes in which the Stormbringer does not appear. They are also good for showing the Stormbringer being loaded up or unloaded. Casualty Trolleys: These are prop versions of the casualty trolley, and do not fold or have any posable parts. For static images they are fine, and they take up less memory than the figure version. One has a slightly different pose to the other, with one side-rail raised, other than that they are identical and take the same tiling textures. External Tanks: The Stormbringer, if real, would almost always fly with either the external tanks fitted or (less commonly) the weapons pods. The front and rear of the weapon pods would contain fuel anyway, so carrying the larger pods would not shorten the range too much. The external fuel tanks are a set of three props, the pylons and tanks are separate. Making them separate props means you can show them being dropped or replace the pods with prop of your own making or one you obtained elsewhere. As they are smart-props make sure Stormbringer is selected before you load these; if you have more than one Stormbringer in the scene ensure you select the right one. -------------- 7. DAZ Studio: Number one warning for Studio users: Keep limits on for the figures in this package! Several parts of the ERC rigging for this product need the software to repect dial limits, or else an unpredictable mess will result. This applies to the Stormbringer, Stormrider, the Casualty Trolley and the conforming Weapons Pods figures. Number two warning for Studio users: Leave most of the hidden dials in this product hidden, and leave them alone. Several of them can make a mess. Exception: In the 60mm rocket pod props the "Launch1" to "Launch6" morphs can be revealed and used to manually launch the rockets in the pod. This can be used to make up for the "Ripple Launch Rockets" dial not working, if you have a version of Studio where it doesn't work. Before rendering in Studio: Before rendering Stormbringer or Stormrider in DAZ Studio apply one of the MAT poses to ensure the materials are set up properly. Most of the materials are designed in Poser so that they import well into Studio, but the cockpit canopies won't look right without a MAT pose applied and a few other materials will be too shiny. Rocket Pods: The "Ripple Launch Rockets" dial in each 60mm rocket pod does not work properly in some versions of DAZ Studio as dial limits are not respected properly for some dial types, and the ERC rig that makes this work uses hidden dials that need to have limits working. If you're using DAZ Studio 4 this should eventually be fixed by an update from DAZ, earlier versions will not be fixed. -------------- 8: Real World Dimensions Stormbringer: Length: 59 ft 2 in (18.03m). Wingspan: 52 ft 3 in (15.92 m). Height (landing gear down, on ground): 13 ft 2 in (4.01m). Height (gear down, engines in VTOL posn) 15 ft 9 in (4.8m). Height (landing gear folded, in flight): 12 ft 2 in (3.70m). Height (in flight, engines in VTOL posn) 14 ft 10 in (4.52m). Unarmed Stormrider version is the same except for: Height (Landing gear folded, in flight): 12 ft (3.65m). Height (In flight, engines in VTOL posn) 14 ft 7.5 in (4.45m). -------------- 9: Clip Art: A fair sized Clip-Art Package is provided. This contains the Stormbringer Logo, the Stormrider Logo and a number of badges. Almost all of the squadron and wing badges used for the product are provided so that you can texture other items to match your Stormbringer. M4's T-Shirt (from the M4 Basic Wear) can look superb textured with one of those badges front and back, for example, or they can go on ground vehicles, signs or uniforms. The Clip-Art must not be redistributed! It is for making textures for your own use only, and if redistribution of anything created with the clip-art is desired then please contact me to obtain permission. -------------- 10.
