A minimum of 768Mb of RAM with Poser (Mac and PC). A minimum of 4Gb of RAM is recommended for use with any meaningfully detailed set loaded. You need to install ALL THREE of the main .ZIP files (FA-Guardian-PoserRuntime1.zip, FA-Guardian-PoserRuntime2.zip and FA-Guardian-PoserRuntime3.zip) whether you are using Poser or DAZ Studio. DAZ Studio users also need to install FA-Guardian-DAZ-Studio-ExtrasRuntime.zip as this contains the DAZ Studio specific versions of the MAT poses; the product will work in DAZ Studio without these files, but it won't look as good when rendered. -------------- Ownership statement: All of this product's content was created by The Fire Angel. Blender was used for all modelling. Poser 6 plus the BB-Edit Lite text editor were used to create the Poser format files. PhotoShop Elements was used for the texturing. DAZ Studio 3.1.2.32 and the BB-Edit Lite text editor were used to create the DAZ Studio MAT files. All source files have been kept in case proof of copyright is needed. -------------- Detailed Installation Instructions Extract the zip-archive with your zip program: - Open WinZip and press the button "Extract" In the window "Folders/drives", select the folder that contains your Poser program. (for example c:\program files\Poser4\). - The check box "Use Folder names" must be marked. That way, all files will placed in the correct path. DAZ Studio Install: You need to install ALL THREE of the main .ZIP files (FA-Guardian-PoserRuntime1.zip, FA-Guardian-PoserRuntime2.zip and FA-Guardian-PoserRuntime3.zip) whether you are using Poser or DAZ Studio. DAZ Studio users also need to install FA-Guardian-DAZ-Studio-ExtrasRuntime.zip as this contains the DAZ Studio specific versions of the MAT poses; the product will work in DAZ Studio without these files, but it won't look as good when rendered. Don't install this product in the DAZ Studio Content directory; install it in the Runtime directory for Poser if you have Poser, and then set DAZ Studio to import it as Poser content from there (in Studio's preferences). If you don't have Poser install it in a Runtime folder alongside "Content" and then set DAZ Studio to treat this folder as a Poser Runtime folder to import from (In preferences, just as if you had Poser as well as Studio). This kind of unified DAZ Studio/Poser Runtime installation is a lot easier to produce and to debug than separate Poser and Studio versions so that's the best way for me to deliver a decent product for both sets of users. -------------- Conversion and/or application instructions Mac users will need to install using a manual method (or an Applescript known as "Merge Folders"; Google or another search engine will help you find it; make sure you get version 1.1 or later). -------------- Materials: If you want to texture this vehicle yourself there is a guide to doing so in the documentation folder, called FA-GuardianTextureGuide.txt. The Guardian is part of the Storm-Hammer series of vehicles, using the same tracked chassis as the Storm-Hammer tank itself; the Storm-Hammer series use tiling textures on many material zones to allow very high detail levels without large (and therefore memory-eating) textures; a 1024x1024 pixel map can be used but it may give as much detail as a conventional texure map more than 8,000 pixels across. The quality of results is of course still dependent upon the quality of the textures and whether they tile properly, but this method works very well when the textures are good. -------------- Usage Tips/Limitations: There are a lot of files and plenty of options; I'll run through them and where you will find them one area at a time. Note that I don't always describe things in the order in which they appear in the Poser or DAZ Studio menu. -------------- 1. Figures menu: FIre Angel Tanks: Yes, I know they are APCs not tanks, but if you have my tank pack as well it makes more sense for all of the vehicles to share a folder; one folder with just four items in for the tanks and another with the APCs and interiors seemed less convenient to me. So here we go... M-94 APC, M-94A Ambulance, M-95 IFV: The vehicles are: The M-94 Guardian APC (APC=Armoured Personnel Carrier). The M-94A Guardian Armoured Ambulance. The M-95 Battle-Wolf IFV (IFV=Infantry Fighting Vehicle). All three vehicles have a crew of two; a driver and a commander; in the armed vehicles fitted with turrets the commander is also the gunner/weapons system operator. The M-94 Guardian seats fourteen people plus the crew, the M-95 Battle-Wolf seats twelve plus the crew. Two places are removed in the M-95 to make room for a substantial magazine for the 40mm cannon in the turret (this would also need to be heavily armoured). The ambulance carries the standard mobility crew of two plus two stretcher-trolleys and seats for four people; usually this would be two medics and seats for two seated injured. It could sometimes be a crew of two paramedics and a surgeon with seating for just one seated injured person. All three vehicles work in the same way, all three have mostly the same dials and very similar dimensions. An armoured or mechanised infantry unit would have mostly M-94 APCs, an armoured cavalry unit mostly M-95 IFVs, and medical units would possess some of the M-94A ambulances for rescuing injured personnel under fire. The M-94 could be used for cargo as well as moving troops, hence the folding seats and the many cargo props provided. All three vehicles are based upon the same chassis and hull structure, though only two of them have the small automated turrets fitted. These represent an "active kill" system designed to use small concentrated lasers to shoot down incoming RPGs (Rocket-Propelled Grenades), anti-tank missiles or mortar shells. This would reduce the vulnerability of the vehicles to attack by infantry weapons when in an urban environment or forest. Instead of lasers the turrets could be fitted with high-powered machine guns to make it safer for friendly infantry to be near the vehicle. The small turrets could also be used for infantry support fire and for use against enemy infantry and light vehicles. The specialist ambulance version is completely unarmed so that it complies with the Geneva Conventions; ambulances are supposed to be unarmed and not to be fired upon. If you want to arm your ambulance then conform the ambulance interior to the APC instead and use the ambulance MAT poses on it. This might be necessary if your Poser or DAZ Studio troops are fighting an enemy that doesn't comply with the Geneva convention's rules... Dials: Click on the main body of the vehicle (the body part is called "MainHull") to find the control dials. The dial names are mostly self-explanatory, they open the hatches, rotate the turrets, elevate the guns etc. For the dials in the "Tracks" category, read section 3, "Tips and special features for animators". Note that the rear ramp has a door in it; you can't open both at once as lowering the ramp shuts the door. This represents an internal mechanism fitted to lock one as soon as anyone opens the other. For boarding or exiting the vehicle routinely troops would use the ordinary door, but when leaving or entering the vehicle in a hurry the ramp would allow them to move much faster. This "ramp with a door" feature is found on real APC vehicles. -------------- 2. Figures menu: Interiors: The vehicle interiors are supplied separately; they are conforming figures. This can speed up rendering when you are not using them, as the extra polygons are not present. So exterior shots render slightly faster and of course the vehicles take less memory this way. When you want to show the interiors load the approporiate version and conform it to the vehicle you want to use it with. M-94 Interior 1 is the most commmon one for the APC; it has folding seats so that it can quickly be configured to carry troops or cargo or a mixture of the two. The commander's and driver's seats can be raised along with their controls so that they can ride with their heads outside. Not a great idea in a battle zone, but perhaps OK for the journey there on a sunny day... Each of the folding seats is designed to seat two troops if they are normal characters, or one Freak-based character. So the M-94 can seat fourteen troops plus crew or seven Freaks, while the IFV can seat twelve or six Freaks plus the crew. The crew seats should accomodate Freaks or normal troops. M-94 Interior 2 is the "High comfort" interior. An armoured transport unit might have one or two of these for transporting VIPs in a battle-zone, or for moving troops longer than normal distances inside the APCs. The M-94A ambulance interior has some smart-props that load with it; the casualty trolleys and medical gas cylinders. You can easily remove or reposition these to suit your scene. -------------- 3. Figures menu: Other figures: Casualty Trolley: This can be raised or lowered and the castors rotated for steering. Click on the main part of the figure to see dials to raise and lower the trolley and rotate all of the castors together. The figure version is provided as it is more adaptable than the smart-prop versions, and is useful in scenes that don't even contain a vehicle from the Storm-Hammer series. It is identical to the trolley provided with my Stormbringer DropShip so it shares geometry and textures with that item. Tie-Down Single: This is a posable figure version of the tie-down kit for the vehicles. The prop version is easier to use, but is not posable. When your APCs or IFVs are parked in a transport or big DropShip they need to be anchored in place, and this device represents the method of doing that. It would be attached to the floor using an internal bolt system and then could be positioned to clip onto the anchor loops mounted on the vehicle. If you're just showing it tied down the prop method is best, but if you want to show the crew of the DropShip loading up or unloading then the tie-down figure can be used. -------------- 4. Tips and special features for animators: There are four dials that move the wheels and tracks in a realistic fashion; thanks to Helgarde De Barros for the tutorial that showed me how to rig them! OK, RightTrack and LeftTrack move the wheels and tracks on their sides of the vehicle; positive dial movement propels that side of the vehicle forwards (as the lower part of the track will move backwards) and negative movement moves in the opposite direction. BothTracks does what you would expect, it moves both sets of wheels and tracks in the same way as the separate dials. Using these three it's not hard to animate the vehicle manoeuvering. The track links are each 0.049 Poser units long, so if you're animating the vehicle for each movement of one unit on the tracks dials that is how far the vehicle should advance or reverse. The "Roll Fwd/Back" dial moves the vehicle the correct distance as well as moving the wheels and tracks, so it's much easier if you're moving the vehicle in a straight line. 5. Poses menu: Fire Angel APC MATs: For most users, these need no explanation; select one of the vehicles and double click on the icon. All of the poses provided work on any of the three vehicles provided. The code will apply the new texture set and appropriate material settings. Proper DAZ Studio versions will be used by Studio automatically if both are installed; if you only use Poser you don't need the DAZ Studio files in the separate .ZIP. If you only use DAZ Studio, you can delete the ".pz2" versions, keeping only those ".dsa" files. If you're one of the many who use both Poser and DAZ Studio then of course leave both sets of files in place. There is a separate sub-menu (folder) called "Ambulance Versions" that contains the MAT poses to make your APC into an ambulance. -------------- 6. Props Menu: Fire Angel M94 APC: I deliberately designed some of the props to be useful as scene fillers in many scenes in which the vehicles do not appear. They are also good for showing a vehicle being loaded up or unloaded. Since the APC might be used at times for forward supply of ammunition and food this collection of props contains many food boxes and ammunition crates. There are also drums marked with labels for lubricating oil and some spare road wheels and sprockets, as well as a small chain of spare track links. Note the smart props; some of these share geometry with the equivalent Storm-Hammer tank props, so they are interchangeable, BUT ONE DOESN'T. The tie-down kit is slightly different as the APCs aren't quite as long as the tanks and also had to have their rear tie-down loops positioned differently. So you can use the extra-heavy track skirts from any vehicle in the Storm-Hammer series, but not the tie-down kits. Some of the props are multi-props, which means you can load more than one prop with just a double-click. These are still independant props and aren't parented to each other or tied together in any way. I put them in this form to prevent you having to scroll up and down a huge list to find a particular crate or box. -------------- 7. DAZ Studio: Number one warning for Studio users: Keep limits ON for the figures in this package! Several parts of the ERC rigging for this product need the software to repect dial limits, or else an unpredictable mess will result.. Number two warning for Studio users: Leave most of the hidden dials in this product hidden, and leave them alone. Several of them can make a mess. Before rendering in Studio: Before rendering any of these vehicles in DAZ Studio apply one of the MAT poses to ensure the materials are set up properly. Most of the materials are designed in Poser so that they import well into Studio, but the glass in the lights won't look right without a MAT pose applied and a few other materials may be too shiny. -------------- 8: Real World Dimensions: Height (M-94 Guardian APC): 8 ft 0.5 in (2.45m) Height (M-94 Guardian Armoured Ambulance): 8 ft (2.44m) Height (M-95 Battle-Wolf IFV): 8 ft 6.8 in (2.61m) Width (all versions): 11 ft 8 in. (3.55m) Width (all versions, with heavy skirts fitted): 12 ft 5 in. (3.78m) Length (all versions): 25 ft 10.2 in. (7.88m) -------------- 9: Clip Art: A fair sized Clip-Art Package is provided. This contains a number of badges. Almost all of the badges used for the product are provided so that you can texture other items to match your Storm-Hammer series vehicles. M4's T-Shirt (from the M4 Basic Wear) can look superb textured with one of those badges front and back, for example, or they can go on ground vehicles, signs or uniforms. The Clip-Art must not be redistributed! It is for making textures for your own use only, and if redistribution of anything created with the clip-art is desired then please contact me to obtain permission. -------------- 10.
